TREATMENTS
Nutrition plays a pivotal role in health and disease. A balanced diet plays an even more important role in maintaining health for individuals with kidney disease. Most patients with kidney disease need to follow a low-sodium diet. Research shows that diet rich in animal proteins may accelerate the progression of chronic kidney disease. In addition, patients with advanced stages of kidney disease may also have to limit potassium and phosphorus intake. We at The Kidney Clinic of Boca Raton offer counseling to optimize nutritional status, to slow progression of kidney disease, and to address metabolic derangements associated with kidney diseases.
Kidney failure leads to the buildup of water and waste products in the body. Dialysis is a procedure during which the waste products and excess water are removed from the body. In peritoneal dialysis, the patient’s abdominal cavity is used for the dialysis procedure. The inside lining of the abdomen (the peritoneum) serves as a natural filter. A cleansing solution is put into the abdomen through a soft plastic tube (catheter). During the dwell time, waste products and excess water are filtered from the blood into the solution. After dwelling in the abdominal cavity for a few hours, the solution is drained from the abdomen and is discarded. Peritoneal dialysis offers several advantages over hemodialysis. It provides greater flexibility and independence in performing dialysis treatments. Furthermore, peritoneal dialysis patients can follow a diet that is not as strict as it is for hemodialysis patients. We at The Kidney Clinic of Boca Raton maintain an active peritoneal dialysis program that is especially well suited for individuals who wish to continue an active and fulfilling life.
Hemodialysis uses an artificial kidney to remove waste products and excess water from the blood. Hemodialysis can be performed either at home or in an outpatient dialysis center. We at The Kidney Clinic of Boca Raton have considerable experience in providing hemodialysis to patients with kidney failure. We have served as the medical directors for major dialysis companies for over the last two decades.
A vascular access is a blood vessel or a soft plastic tube (catheter) that is used to access the blood circulation of the patient during hemodialysis. The vascular access is considered a lifeline for hemodialysis patients. Because most blood vessels close to the skin are small, they do not provide an adequate blood for hemodialysis. Therefore, a vascular surgeon creates a connection between an artery and a vein to create a so-called arteriovenous fistula. An arteriovenous fistula provides adequate blood flow needed for hemodialysis. We at The Kidney Clinic of Boca Raton work closely with vascular surgeons specialized in the creation of vascular accesses.
Kidney transplantation is a surgical procedure to place a kidney from a donor into a patient with kidney failure. Compared with dialysis, kidney transplant improves the quality of life, increases survival, and reduces dietary restrictions. However, kidney transplantation is not suitable for everyone with kidney failure. We at The Kidney Clinic of Boca Raton have considerable experience in managing patients with kidney transplants. Dr. Nayer was trained as a transplant nephrologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School. Later, we worked as a transplant nephrologist at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, New York.
