Academic Nephrologist, Internist, Pathologist, Educator, and Researcher
Ali Nayer, MD earned his medical degree at Cologne University in Germany. After residency training in pathology and later in internal medicine at Brown University, he completed his fellowship in nephrology & hypertension, nephropathology, and kidney transplantation at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Later, he studied diabetes and diabetic kidney disease at Joslin Diabetes Center, the world's preeminent diabetes research and clinical care organization in Boston.
Dr. Nayer held faculty positions at the Harvard Medical School (Lecturer), Alpert Medical School at Brown University (Assistant Professor of Medicine), and Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami (Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine). During an academic career spanning over nearly two decades, he practiced consultative nephrology at some of the most prestigious tertiary medical centers in the country. In addition, while a faculty at Brown University, he served as the consultant nephrologist at the Hallett Center for Diabetes. Later, he served as the Medical Director of the Dialysis and Apheresis Services at the University of Miami Hospital. He also served as a Medical Director of several outpatient dialysis centers including Fresenius and DaVita.
Dr. Nayer is considered an expert in inflammatory, glomerular, and metabolic kidney diseases as well as thrombotic microangiopathies. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed scientific reports and book chapters on kidney diseases. He served as the principal investigator or co-investigator of several NIH-sponsored clinical trials and presented his research findings at numerous national and international meetings. In addition, he served on the editorial board of several peer-reviewed medical journals and was frequently invited to give lectures on kidney diseases.
